Conclusion

There are two important factors that affect the page ranking of a web site.  The most important factor first being adopted by Google is inbound links. The number and qualities of web sites that are linked to yours are used as measurements of site popularity.  This method is also now adopted by MSN Search, Yahoo! and possibly by others.
You can still have your web site found on search directories without having a single inbound link, though.  As long as it is submitted and then indexed, a web site can be found if it is correctly key-stuffed with right keywords.
Having inbound links cannot normally be achieved by a one-day effort. Therefore, in order to have your web site found by Internet surfers on search directories, it is advisable that you find the most frequently sought keywords in line with the content of the site. There are tools like Google's Keyword Tool and Overture's Keyword Selector Tool you can use to find right keywords.   In constructing and then submitting a webs site, we recommend the following steps

1. Decide on the main subject. Then use keyword tools to find the most frequently sought keywords.

2. Build an index page with the keywords you find.

3. Decide which search directories to submit your web site to. For example, if your site is mainly oriented towards Windows OS users, you would definitely like to submit your web site to MSN Search. And if you expect that there will be people who primarily use Mac OS, you would like your web site to appear on Excite, Google and Netscape. In this case, you should submit your web site to Google since Excite and Netscape are both fully or partially powered by Google. Also, consider submitting the site to ODP since many commercial search directories get listings from them.
For now, you can submit your site to Google and MSN Search with free of charge. Yahoo! still accepts free submission. Yahoo! also has a paid express review service called Search Submit Express.

4. Use site statistics given by your web hosting company to check if any spiders have recently visited your web site. If they have, enter keywords to see if your web site can be found on search directories.

5. If your traffic is low, you may want to consider placing a commercial ad on search directories.
