Danger of Relying on Domain Mail Servers

We have recently been caught up with a serious problem of not receiving e-mail messages. The problem is so serious that our mail servers have failed to accept messages for several hours each day for the past several days. The damage is permanent. Some messages reaching our mail servers were rejected. And they cannot be recovered.
Back in March, we asked our hosting company to switch servers so that we could use PHP5 instead of PHP4. Our hosting company complied with our request. Domain name server (DNS) entries were not corrected to the extent that our domains were pointing to an old server as well as the current one. They failed to stop our domains from pointing to the old server. As a consequence, our websites were sometimes not accessible. There were times we couldn’t connected our FTP server. More importantly, we couldn’t use our mail servers, which also rejected some messages.
In fact, our hosting company knew what was causing the problem in Day 1. But they didn’t fix it entirely. That’s why we continued to suffer from this serious DNS problem. Anyway, let me wrap up the points we learned from this experience.
- Hosting company changed domain name servers
- Mail servers were not accessible at the same time websites were not accessible.
- Websites and mail servers are hosted at the same company.
Sometimes, it is true that your hosting company switches servers without your permission. So you need to be aware of the server that hosts your websites. We use several Hotmail accounts and GMAIL accounts. Usually, even when a website becomes inaccessible, your mail server can receive e-mail messages. But there are instances when your mail servers reject incoming messages like our recent case. So we highly recommend that you use these free web-based e-mail services in order to receive crucial messages.

MacHouse is not funded by tax payers' money. We have limited resources. We also need time to sleep and eat just as others. So we will not act as the International police to contact all victims of website abuse. All you have to do is to subscribe to spam messages and spam posts. If we can, why don't you?
