Tutorial: How to Transfer Domains Out Of GoDaddy’s Resellers

web hosting solution

If you have your own domain as an add-on to host your website content, you can switch web hosting companies with little trouble. In fact, we switch web hosting companies quite often. If we don’t like one, we simply take our websites to a different host. So far, we are sticking to the same host for the past 16 months, though.

How about domains? As we reported last time, we have two domains that we have registered through GoDaddy‘s evil reseller websitespot.com. We don’t like GoDaddy, and we don’t like this reseller, either, because of a 2nd-year price hike and their lying about who they are in its ‘about’ page and its WhoIs registration. So let’s see how to transfer domains out of GoDaddy’s resellers. And you can take your domains to ESTDomains, Public Domain Registry or whatever you can think of. TUCOWS, Inc? Oh, no… That’s another irresponsible domain registrar as bad as GoDaddy.

Okay. Let’s take a quick look at the WhoIs record for one of our domains. ICANN Registrar’s name is Wild West Domains, Inc. (See Screenshot 01.) That’s another name that GoDaddy uses for domains registered through its resellers.

Anyway, in order to transfer a domain, you need to obtain the transfer secret (or EPP auth code) for it from the current registrar. GoDaddy resellers call this code Authorization Code. So you need to log in your account at first. Then click on the name of the domain which you want to transfer. (See Screenshot 02.) And you will see a clickable link that says Send by Email to the left. (See Screenshot 03.) Click on the Okay button (See Screenshot 04.), and the authorization code will be sent to your registered e-mail address.

Before checking your e-mail messages, there is one more step you need to take with your domain account. A domain transfer may be locked. Go back to Domains >> Details again. And click on Change next to Locked this time. (See Screenshot 05.) Then you need to disable Lock domains. (See Screenshot 06.)

Then? You need to check your e-mail messages. You should find a message titled Information You Requested. (See Screenshot 07.) Now, you can use this authorization code at a new domain registrar. Simply, enter the domain name you want to transfer. Then provide the transfer secret for it. (See Screenshot 08.)

Next, you should hear from your new domain registrar for transfer confirmation. You need to check your e-mail address again. Which e-mail address, one with GoDaddy’s reseller or one with a new domain registrar? It’s the one with GoDaddy’s reseller. (See Screenshot 09.)

Okay. Let’s go over the steps one again.

  1. Log in the control panel and click on the domain you wish to transfer.
  2. Click on ‘Send by Email’ next to Authorization Code. Then click on the Okay button.
  3. Go back to Domains >> Details and click on ‘Change’ to the right of Locked. Then disable ‘Lock domains.’
  4. Check your e-mail and get the authorization code sent from support@secureserver.net.
  5. Find a new domain registrar and provide the transfer secret along with the corresponding domain you wish to transfer.
  6. Finally, you may hear from your new domain registrar. Click on the confirmation link to proceed.

You may hear from support@secureserver.net once again. The message should start with

If you have no intention of changing your mind about transferring the domain, then you can ignore it. If you decide to give GoDaddy reseller a second chance, then you can abort the domain transfer mission by going back to the control panel and enabling ‘Lock domains.’

  1. domain reseller says:

If you are hoping to become a domain name reseller you will need to have a reseller hosting account with a hosting company. You can then host all of your domains on that account as well as sell domains to other people. You can get your secondary accounts through internet marketing or offline marketing strategies.
