TOKYO (MacHouse) - In reference to yesterday’s report concerning a fake anti-virus scan website at antivirus-scanner.com, we have asked Sophos to analyze the file that we were forced to download. The following is their reply.

The virus lab has detected it as Troj/Dwnldr-HDG.

Troj/Dwnldr-HDG is a downloading Trojan for the Windows platform.

When Troj/Dwnldr-HDG is installed it attempts to download and run a fake anti-virus tool.

Please see this link for more information: http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/trojdwnldrhdg.html.

It’s a relatively harmless virus except that Windows users are likely to be forced to see a fake anti-virus scan once in a while without actually going to antivirus-scanner.com. Mac OS won’t be affected because the file itself is a Windows file. And Norton AntiVirus for Mac Version 11 will not detect any malicious code.

We thank Sophos for their analyzing the file and a prompt reply.
