Spam: The Chevron/Texas Official Prize Notification – Part 1

TOKYO (MacHouse) – Almost 12 hours ago, an organized cyber criminal group circulated a spam message to scam Internet users. Sender’s address is shown as info@chev.org. The message goes

PMB 1282, LAGOS NIGERIA

THE CHEVRON/TEXACO OFFICIAL PRIZE NOTIFICATION.

You have been selected in the on-going Chevron/Texaco award held this
SEPTEMBER 2008. We the promo board are pleased to inform you that, you
alongside four(4) other lucky winners have been approved for a
payment of $500,000.00 USD. (Five hundred thousand Dollars) in cash. Note
that this promotion is mainly aimed at alleviating
poverty, it is also aimed at encouraging internet Users worldwide. This email
is randomly sent to five people worldwide. If
you did receive this email, it means you are one of the five(5) lucky
winners. Your verification number is:(CT-222-6747,FGN/P-900-56).
This promotion is held to mark Chevron`s Aniversary. You will be required to
fill out your information in the below
given form and send it to the funds release officer in West Africa, as this

(See Screenshot 01.) Interestingly, there is a website found at http://chev.org. (See Screenshot 02.) We don’t know if ChevronTexaco is responsible for this website, though. And we strongly doubt that the oil company is giving away $500,000 to five lucky winners.

Our preliminary analysis shows that this spam message originates from a server run by a Taiwanese government agency (the Education Bureau). And the suspicious website at chev.org appears to be hosted in Tampa, Florida, USA. We will have a more detailed report in several hours.
